Wet - Don't Wanna Be Your Girl

I love this video because the screen within screen and split screens add a whole new element to the footage. The split screen with extreme close ups shows the artist in an intimate, vunerable state as all her imperfections are on display. Paired with the screen within screen and 'home video' style filming  the viewers are able to connect with the artists therefore, developing a positive, familiar 'Star image'. The decision to have freely moving screen within screen on top of footage from the natural environment emphasises the fact that she has 'escaped' and is no longer bound by anything or anyone, as stated in the lyrics 'I dint want to be your girl anymore'.

Preparation For Prelim

For our preliminary, we only need one prop: a jukebox. We made this ourselves using a cardboard box and a sharpie, then to substitute the video on the front as shown in the video we took a picture of our two actors to stick in its place. Here is the end result:

The locations we will be filming at are Bush Hill Park in front of a graffiti wall as a substitute for the wall covered in posters in the video, Town Park for the field in the first shot and then a quiet street called Raleigh road as it has a brick walk for the shots on the street.

We also made sure to have appropriate costumes to mimic the duo, for my one I will be wearing a white shirt with jeans for the majority of the shots then for the bedroom shots I will change into a blue button up shirt with a grey hoodie just like the artist. Renee will wear a grey jumper with a cap like her artist and then change into a flannel shirt with the cap for the bedroom shots.

Prelim Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our preliminary task. We decided to do our prelim from Rizzle Kicks - Down With The Trumpets, second 0.20 to 0.48, we chose this song because within the first few seconds they have a range of different locations which allows us to experience what it will be like to find locations for our real music video. Within our chosen sequence of shots the camera work is very different to anything we have done before so hopefully it will stretch us and of filming skills. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

Video for Prelim

We have chosen to mirror a 30 second segment from Rizzle Kicks video for 'Down With The Trumpets' for our preliminary task. We selected this video because its light-hearted and fun, its also contains lots of lip-synching so we will be able to practice our editing skills for our actual music video. The sequence of shots we have chosen are mainly moving shots so it should be a little challenge for us to film since we are used to shooting still frames. Overall, it should be a fun little project, I'm really looking forward to it.

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?

This is an exclusively abstract music video as it has no performance or narrative; the whole video consists of artistic graphics and lots of editing. I chose this video because the graphics demonstrate the voyeuristic treatment of women, in accordance to Andrew Goodwins Theory, as they depict women in skimpy clothing and suggestive positions. To further exploit the female body many of the graphics illustrate naked curvaceous women compared to fully clothed men.

The music is complimented by the visuals extremely well: the lines move accordingly to the audio waves, this highlights the instrumentals and creates harmony within the video. In addition to this, the visuals amplify the lyrics, for example, animated lips appeared along with the lyrics 'puker up' this connection between the audio and the visuals helps the sequence of animations flow effortlessly.

Paramore - Hard Times

With a bright colour palette, high-key lighting and a high-energy performance this video perfectly fits the characteristics of a pop, alternative rock genre according to Goodwin's theory. The fun graphics that are edited into the visuals represent more of the pop culture and create a mix between abstract and performance, this makes the video fun and exciting. The combination of wide-shots and three shots of the band conforms to Goodwin's theory of star image as the band are presented as an entertaining, lively unit that audiences can love.

Amber Run - I Found

This music video subverts the culture of indie rock artists doing performance videos, by producing a strong narrative piece without any lip-synching. I like the fact that the video is constructed as a legitimate film or tv production with distinct establishing shots at the beginning, a clear storyline that connects with audiences and a gripping cliffhanger: 'To be continued'. In line with Goodwin's Theory there is a faint connection between the lyrics and the visuals as the lines 'I found love where it wasn't supposed to be' refers to the younger male in the video who helps her, this grabs the attention of the audience and causes them to focus more on the narrative.

Solange - Cranes In The Sky

I have chosen this music video because it follows Andrew Goodwin's theory of the relationship between music and video. The first sequence of shots are cut on the beat to different locations, immediately this establishes a relationship between the music and the visuals. The constant change in location is emphasised with the repetition of the lyric 'away' this suggests that the video is a visual representation of her trying to escape something or someone. The wide shots of Solange in these locations takes the focus away from her and more on the composition of the frame, it is almost as if she becomes part of her surroundings, however, the use of high key lighting ensures she is always illuminated hence how she 'can not get away'.

Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky

I love the composition of this video because it is a fairly new song, released in 2014, yet it was shot and edited using techniques such as slow zooms, cross dissolves and the mise-en-scene fitting for an 80's recording studio to produce the aesthetic of an older production. It conforms to the Goodwin Theory of genre characteristics as indie rock artists usually compose performance videos, however unlike other rock videos, the use of slow dissolve transitions slowed the pace of the video and paired with the multiple close-ups of the singer from different angles the audience is positioned to focus more on the lyrics rather than the performance.
