Audience Feedback - The Filter

Here are some of the filters that we sampled previously, this time we applied them to the footage from the opening shots of the music video:

Using the clips we edited above, we carried out a survey to gather audience feedback on which filter we should use. I created a questionnaire on SurveyMonkey then asked 8 people for which filter the prefered and their reasons for their choice.

 Here are the results:

From the result of this survey, it seems that people prefer No filter, however, depending on the mood of the song they suggest using Filter 1 for the first part of the video when the protagonist is working at B&Q because it has a more sombre feel and then getting rid of the filter once she moves outside and starts busking to reflect the change of mood.

Visual effects for our music video

As our new genre is R&B/Soul I have researched some of the characteristics of this genre and found out that most artists edit the footage according to the ambience they are trying to create through the music, this way the visuals complement the audio and there is harmony throughout the music video. The general theme of soul music is to go with warm neutral tones that make the audience feel a connection to the music or black and white visuals that focus your attention on the song.

Personally, I like the black and white effect in Yuna's music video because it introduces a subtle vintage aesthetic which effectively establishes the mood of the song. This is something I hope to achieve in our music video.

I have started to play around with the image settings on iMovie to find the right tone that fits the mood of our song, 'I Need A Dollar'.

Style 1:

Style 2:

I feel like the 1st style matches our Soul genre more because of the warm tones.

Insert shots of Money Jar

In addition to the plot, we decided to add insert shots of a jar getting filled with money as an ongoing reference to the lyrics 'I need a dollar' in the song. By using this form of representation we are also able to show the passing of time and as well as the gradual improvement of the protagonist's financial state towards the end of the video.

The Car Wash

This part of the narrative is the first time after getting fired that the protagonist is doing something to make money. It is a positive turn around so we wanted to emphasise it through the editing. In post-production, we made sure that all the shots were short to make the fast-paced editing effective in speeding up the tone and mood of the music video.
